Can Cats Eat Spam? Is Spam Safe For Cats?

Can cats eat Spam? You might have had this thought while you’re opening a can of Spam for your sandwich. If humans can eat Spam, can cats safely eat it too?

There is no short yes or no answer as to whether cats can eat Spam. Technically, it is a pork product and is not toxic to cats. But processed Spam is also very high in fat and sodium, which you should avoid feeding to your cat so they can keep to a balanced and nutritional diet.

As always, you must ask your regular vet before haring any human food with your beloved feline, including Spam. Here’s what you need to know about Spam and cats.

When Is Spam Okay For Cats To Eat?

We know that cats are obligate carnivores, and since Spam is made out of pork, shouldn’t it follow that Spam could be a good fit for a feline’s diet?

Well, the truth is a little more complicated.

If your cat snacks on a tiny bit of Spam, you won’t have to worry too much because it isn’t a poisonous or toxic food for cats to consume. Spam also contains protein, which should be the mainstay of your kitty’s diet.

But as with any human food, always make sure that your cat isn’t fed too much Spam.

While Spam is made out of pork, the main reason why it’s not something to regularly feed your cat is that it’s very high in both sodium and fat. Neither of these are great for any cat’s regular diet. The fat content in Spam could also push your cat into feline obesity territory if they eat it too often.

When it comes to the sodium content of Spam, it’s estimated that just one-sixth of a can contains nearly 20 times the amount of sodium that any kitty should be consuming in one day.

So while you don’t need to panic if you catch your cat sneaking in a Spam snack, it’s not really a food that will benefit your kitty’s health.
