Cat Dies After Alerting Family to House Fire in Maryland

On July 14, a cat alerted a family of three to a house fire in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Unfortunately, the feline lost his life after the heroic act. His humans have deemed him their angel, giving him all the credit for warning them in time. Authorities believe smoke inhalation might be the cause of death since the kitty went back inside the fire and, sadly, never made it out of the property.

Cat deemed hero after saving family from house fire, passes away after alerting his humans

On Sunday, a family of three was awoken by their furry companion, Prince, pawing at them around 4 a.m. Fortunately, the cat alerted the family, and they realized their Gaithersburg, Maryland, house was on fire. Due to the heavy smoke, they couldn’t exit the scene, so they retreated to a bedroom on the property’s second floor.

After ensuring they were safer, the occupants called another building resident and the authorities to report the fire. According to the Washington Post, the resident helped them escape the scene through a window. The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) stated that the smoke alarms were disabled or removed due to a paint job.

When the family escaped the fire, they took their beloved cat. However, Prince escaped his human’s arms and ran back into the house fire. Unfortunately, the MCFRS officials found his body on the second floor of the property. Authorities suspect the feline passed away due to excess smoke inhalation. Rescue efforts were made to rescue the heroic Siamese cat, but they couldn’t save him.

According to MCFRS chief spokesperson Pete Piringer’s post on X — formerly known as Twitter — the family is “giving full credit to their cat.” If not for the kitty’s alertness, the occupants wouldn’t have survived the ordeal. The family deemed their beloved cat their “hero” and “angel” for giving his life to save his owners from the house fire.
