Los Angeles cat lovers are celebrating as the L.A. City Council directed city attorneys to draft an ordinance making it legal to own up to 5 cats as pets in one home. Right now the limit is 3 for both cats and dogs.
The city will also conduct an environmental impact study along with the new ordinance. An earlier policy to trap, neuter/spay and release feral cats to avoid euthanization was struck down in court by a group that sued because they felt the policy would endanger the city’s bird population. That is a heartbreaking shame because our feral cat population here in Los Angeles is growing rapidly and that can’t be good for the birds either. At least a TNR strategy would keep the population under control and help the bird population.
Regardless Los Angeles Animal Control says this would help to lower the number of shelter cats being euthanized and that is a good thing, so three cheers for the Los Angeles City Council!
